Did you know that August is National Relaxation Month? So relax!
In our work-crazed society we can lose sight of the benefits of slowing down and taking time to rest. Now that summer is in full swing, it’s time to enjoy the restorative powers of reconnecting to your body through relaxation.
Research shows surprising health benefits from deep relaxation:
- strengthening your immune system
- for asthmatics, relaxation can widen restricted respiratory passages
- can make you less susceptible to viruses
- can lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels
- for diabetics, relaxation can reduce the need for insulin
- for people with chronic pain relaxation can bring significant relief
But according to Herbert Benson, director of the Division of Behavioral Medicine at Beth Israel Hospital, a part of Harvard Medical School in Boston ''Just sitting quietly or, say, watching television, is not enough to produce the physiological changes,'' said ''You need to use a relaxation technique that will break the train of everyday thought, and decrease the activity of the sympathetic nervous system.''
The summer offers so many choices – it’s simply up to you to choose which style of relaxation that you like. Your heart will thank you, your soul will be gratified, and you’ll sleep better at night.

Take a walk in the nature

One of my favorite great places to rest in the summertime is by the water. There is something magical and restorative in water, and we naturally crave to be near it, by it or in it. Heading to the water, whether it is the beach, a lake or a kiddy pool, can be relaxing and rejuvenating.
Often this relaxation and peace of mind are what our bodies crave the most. So while summer is with us, strap on your sandals and enjoy the rich elements of sun, wind and water and the nourishment that they bring.
