Why do French women not get fat? 6 glamour secrets of eating for pleasure.

The first time I read “French women don’t get fat” I was mesmerized by the feminine energy, style and elegance of this book.

This week as I’m preparing for my next trip to Paris I feel inspired to share with you a few secrets from this book and to encourage you to live more like a French woman: focus on eating for pleasure, well-being, feeling beautiful in your own skin and fitting into latest fashions.

The great thing about changing your habits to live like a French woman is that it has more to do with a state of mind and attitude than with where you live.

Secret # 1 – pleasure and not punishment.

If you are ready to live life of perfect health and figure, you must embrace pleasure, joy and being in your feminine energy as your goal and desire.

It may sound contradictory, but I see it day in and day out that lack of pleasure is on the top of fat triggers in my practice…

Sometimes we feel that focusing on our own pleasure can be selfish, but the truth is that there is nothing noble about giving up our pleasure…

All work and no play can make you not only fat but very boring and grouchy and nobody wants to live like that.

You owe it not only to yourself but to your loved ones.

Secret #2. 3 meals a day.

One of the rituals that is a key to my success is having 3 meals a day and French women seem to agree with that.

I find skipping meals is another fat trigger that I practiced for over 30 years and finally learned that it doesn’t work. It is also true for many of my clients who “tried everything and still can’t lose weight”…

Having 3 meals a day is crucial for our body’s metabolism and it’s the perfect way to avoid snacking.

Secret # 3. talking about snacking… French women don’t snack!

If I can vote for the biggest fat trigger, snacking would be number one on my list. It is usually a result of not eating 3 meals a day and skipping breakfast.

If you drink a lot of coffee in the morning and fill full, then work through your lunch break thinking that you are going to lose weight – it’s a recipe for disaster… By dinner time you are famished and overeating is unavoidable… I have been there…

Secret #4. chic rituals.

In the timeless and packed with wisdom book “ Le Petit Prince” by Saint-Exupery, the fox says  to the little prince, we need rituals.

Since we spent most of our waking hours performing daily rituals why not make them beautiful and look forward to them.

In my life my daily rituals are my source of freedom and enjoyment…

My favorites are: having 3 beautiful meals a day, drinking lots of water between meals and having a glass of champagne on the weekend.

It doesn’t take much to eat a colorful meal at a table with white napkins, pretty plates, beautiful glasses and a candle.

I’m more likely to enjoy each bite, be present and take my time to chew.

Secret #5. making it meaningful and sensual.

Food and ambiance are a sensual experience that should engage all your senses: the color, smell, flavor, taste, and texture are crucial for a French woman.

Eating standing, from plastic containers in front of a TV and texting is not attractive and not something that a feminine woman should ever settle for.

If you feel it’s too much work to set the table, use napkins, glassware, light a candle… you are missing a point. Sitting at a beautifully set table opens you up to a much fuller experience and makes you more mindful and fully present.

Secret # 6. Eat more grandly when celebrating… but not daily.

French women know how to enjoy a 3 or 4 course dinner feeling satisfied and not stuffed by not ordering one or two big dishes, but a few and smaller plates to get the gourmet dinner experience.

Making the portions smaller, but beautifully arranged and changing the plates slows down the pace of dining and gives you time to digest… the faster you eat the more you will need to feel satisfied.

My elegant and spirited message from “French women don’t get fat” is that it is time to give up the guilt and dieting extremes and live and eat smarter and be more joyful.

There is absolutely no French trick that you can’t make your own with a little attention to your body’s needs, keeping an eye on your weaknesses and cultivating pleasures.

I’m planning to chat with a few French women in Paris, note down my discoveries in my journal and share with you more secrets from my trip.

Au revoir!
