How to eat well while traveling?

I’m often asked “how to eat well while traveling?”

Here is how I do it ❤️  

Join me in my kitchen, I’m getting ready for my next trip to California.

Let me ask you a question: have you ever gotten to the airport and discovered that there is absolutely nothing healthy to eat?

I travel a lot and there are not that many airports that offer gourmet dining and juice and salad bars. Although I have to say it’s getting much better.

For many of you, especially if you are new to the whole idea of healthy eating, traveling can sabotage your healthy new lifestyle very quickly.

So… here are a few of my La Dolce Vita Nutrition travel favorites!

The #1 on my list is my travel smoothie. You know that I love my smoothies, but I can’t take them on the plane with me and not all the hotels offer smoothies as a part of their breakfast menu.

So I take what I call, my travel smoothie with me.

I use a combination of the Raw Reserve Green Superfoods which are powdered greens with probiotics and the Garden of life or Vega all-in-one nutritional shake. They are plant-based meal replacements with vitamins and minerals.

Both are gluten, dairy, soy, and sugar free and very high in nutrients and probiotics. The shake comes in many flavors, but my favorite one is chocolate.

The smoothies are perfect for traveling and very filling. You can also use them as a snack when feeling hungry.

All you need to do is mix the two packets with a cup or two of cold water AND voila, you have a nutritious and very tasty, green smoothie ready in seconds. You can buy both products at the Whole Foods Store or Amazon.

My #2 – Renia’s colorful salad. I don’t leave my house without it!

I make one at home or I order it at a salad bar or a restaurant and I take it with me to the airport. Taking my salad with me gives me peace of mind that I will have a healthy meal that will make me feel good.

I know what I will be eating so I don’t have to figure it out what I’m going to get and where when I get to the airport.

I can just have my salad, my snack, drink my tea, and relax and enjoy my trip. I make my salad gigantic with greens, colorful veggies, beans, mushrooms, sprouts, olives, avocados, nuts and seeds and I use light lemon dressing.

My #3 must-travel-with-snack – my homemade trail mix.

I don’t know why, but I always crave something crunchy when I travel, and nuts and seeds are just perfect to satisfy my cravings.

I mix a few different kinds of nuts like walnuts, almonds, and pecans and seeds like pumpkin and sunflower seeds. I also add some dry goji berries. I pack my trail mix into the individual ziploc bags so I don’t eat half a pound of nuts at once… that happened in the past 🙂

The reason I make my own is because most of the ones you get at the airport contain genetically modified canola oil, preservatives, and artificial colors to make dry fruits look more colorful.

My #4 on my checklist is a bag with a selection of herbal teas.

I take my favorite teas with me when I travel because most of the planes and some hotels don’t offer any herbal options.

Caffeine is dehydrating and I feel very dehydrated when I travel, especially on the plane so I’m trying to hydrate as much as I can and stay away from caffeinated drinks.. Not to mention that caffeine gives me headaches.

Having a cup of tea like mint, ginger or chamomile is very soothing, calming, and relaxing for the stomach.

My afternoon cup of tea helps me also with my sugar cravings and snacking after a meal. I created a ritual of having a cup of tea after my lunch. My favorite after lunch, teas are sweet orange or passion fruit.

I use my small glass thermos to keep my tea hot and sip it slowly. When I’m in the hotel I call room service to bring me a pitcher of hot water and I make my own tea.
