Fighting your willpower is a losing battle

I had a conversation recently with a woman who shared with me that she feels frustrated and disappointed with her body because her weight was not coming off even though she thought she was eating well and exercising.

I could hear the tone of disappointment in her voice and I thought about how many times I have been there myself and how many times did I hear the exact same words from so many women like her.

When I asked her “why do you think the weight is not coming off?” her immediate response was, “I don’t know!” but after a long pause came: “I think it’s the snacking, I snack a lot”.

HERE IS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE I SEE SO MANY WOMEN MAKING.

They are using their willpower and self control! In other words, brute force.

And, they are unknowingly sabotaging their weight loss by having a lot of temptations hiding (or worse, out in the open) in the kitchen.

Snacks, drinks and desserts in their home create temptations that work against them.

Very often people are surprised when I share with them that I have no willpower or the desire to use it!

Trying to fight my weaknesses all the time feels exhausting. And is doomed to failure.

I believe that it’s so much easier to be at my ideal weight by clearing my kitchen and my home of cookies, chocolates, ice cream and other “goodies” and not having to use my willpower and fight temptations all the time.

Studies show that women who had even one box of breakfast cereal visible in the kitchen weighed an average of 21 pounds more that those who didn’t.

Can you imagine what happens when you have chocolate, ice cream, cookies and candies in your cabinets?

I have a very simple set of rules when it comes to what is allowed in my kitchen as a snack and when to snack.

  1. I eat 3 large meals a day to feel satisfied
  2. My meals are always at the same time of the day to avoid feeling hungry and snacking
  3. I stay hydrated and have 8-10 glasses of water a day (our body can mistake symptoms of dehydration for hunger)
  4. I have a green juice or a smoothie in the afternoon (usually between 3 and 4 pm)
  5. If I still feel hungry, I have a snack that contains of a cup of berries or a handful of raw nuts (sometimes I mix the nuts with a spoon of raw honey)

I know myself and the fact that I wouldn’t be able to work if I knew that a delicious chocolate is  waiting for me in the kitchen…

I will be thinking all the time what excuse can I use to have a bite, or two… or the whole bar.

A LONG TIME AGO I DECIDED THAT MY KITCHEN IS SAFE FOR ME WHEN IT IS FREE OF TEMPTATIONS.

I still remember my first nutrition course that I took many years ago and at one of the first sessions we were talking about kitchen makeovers.

I came back home and spent about 30 minutes clearing my cabinets and refrigerator of all the cookies, ice creams, chocolates, pretzels, cheeses and chips.

Over the years I have come to realize that most of the time we know what we need to do to make a change, but sometimes we chose to live the story that we’ve created, UNTIL OUR DESIRE IS GREATER THAN OUR STORY!

Is your desire to have the beautiful body, feel sexy, confident and have the freedom to choose what you want to wear bigger than the fear of what it requires to get there?

I once heard a line that I love…

“If you are interested you do what’s convenient, when you are committed, you do what it takes”.

Sending you lots of love,
